Fuschia-decorated vase by George Fishley-Holland, Clevedon, Somerset

This statement vase with slightly flaring neck is decorated in slip pattern and sgraffito lines to form design of hanging fuchsias in pink/cream against a glossy brown background glaze.  The inside is glazed with a delicate turquoise mottled glaze which was one of the signature colours of the pottery.  It is more elaborate than a lot of the pieces which were produced by the Fishley Holland Pottery at Clevedon in Somerset.   Inscribed G.FH on base - for George Tonkin Fishley Holland (1911-2005) who joined his father William's pottery after it was established in 1922.  George later took over the running of the Fishley Holland Pottery after being de-mobbed from the Navy at the end of the Second World War.  George  left to establish Dunster Pottery in 1958, so this vase could either date from the pre-War era or just post-War era up until 1958.
