A well-made stoneware storage jar with a distinctive conical lid, made by Walter Keeler (1942 - present), probably at his studio pottery at Penallt, Wales. It is glazed with dark brown dripped glaze and decorated with an inscribed spiral on the lid. His maker's mark is impressed in the side, and reads 'Walter Keeler' (which he used between 1974 and 1979).
Walter Keeler (1942 - ) established his first pottery in 1965 at Bledlow Bridge, Buckinghamshire, having attended Harrow School of Art, London (1958 - 1963) and trained under Michael Casson. In 1976, he moved to Penallt, Wales, and continued to run a studio pottery. He became Professor of Ceramics at the University of the West of England in 1994 and was named Welsh Artist of the Year in 2007.
