Geoffrey Whiting studio pottery teapot

£178.00Price

A beautiful Japanese pottery inspired studio teapot, made by Geoffrey Whiting (1919-1988) of Avoncroft Pottery, made c1949-1971.   The grey/brown clay body is glazed in black Tenmoku glaze, with an unglazed handle applied over the top of the pot. There are also impressed maker's marks near the base. The Tenmoku glaze is disturbed by random patterns in wax-resist technique leaving parts of the surface a striking design of unglazed fired clay. The pot has an unglazed base with indistinct pencil marks, possibly 35/-.

  • Whiting set up pottery at Stoke Prior, near Bromsgrove c1949 and subsequently moved to Hampton Lovett, near Droitwich, Worcestershire in 1955.  He closed this pottery when he moved to Kent in 1971.

    • Height approx. 18cm
    • Width approx. 20cm including spout
    • Diameter approx. 16cm at widest point

There are a couple of spots of unglazed clay on the interior of the teapot (possible flaws in the production) so the teapot may not be entirely watertight if used, but in excellent original condition.
