Studio pottery casserole dish by Michael Emmett
A beautiful studio pottery casserole or serving dish made by renowned potter and artist Michael Emmett. The rounded body has two handles and is decorated with incised bands, whilst the lid has one loop handle and a double incised band. Both are glazed on the exterior in a light grey-fawn matt glaze with dark brown accents; the interior is glazed in a warmer fawn speckled glaze. The lowest portion of the dish and underside are unglazed, with the maker's 'ME' painted mark. The lid has some crazing on the underside and cracks which appear to have happened in the original firing process.
Michael Emmett studied fine art painting at Ravensbourne College of Art, before working as an assistant to Michael Leach (1913-1985) at Yelland. He later became a production thrower at Poole Pottery, Dorset, for two years, working under Guy Sydenham (1916-2005). After lecturing for over two years, he set up his first studio producing salt glaze pottery in a disused brickyard near Fordingbridge, on the edge of the New Forest. He is now based in Devon.
Emmett has also won awards for his work in watercolours and enamel on porcelain.
