Miniature jug, attributed to the Fishley Holland Pottery
A delightful, small, terracotta, studio pottery jug, glazed in a vibrant aqua blue glaze with lighter blue glaze hand-painted vertical flashes or petals around the body. It has a lovely pinched pouring lip and applied loop handle. The base is unglazed with a number of indistinct inscribed and ink marks. Owing to the clay body, glazes and characteristic style of decoration, we have attributed this jug to the Fishley Holland Pottery.
The Fishley Holland family have made studio pottery for seven generations, with the first pottery founded by George Fishley (b 1778) in North Devon around 1800. Members of the family taught, influenced and worked alongside some of the 20th century's biggest names in studio pottery. Members of the family are still producing pottery, more than 200 years later!
William Fishley Holland moved to Clevedon, North Somerset in the early 1920s, where he established the Fishley Holland Pottery, which finally closed in 1977.
