Early Holkham Studio Pottery jug by Cyril Ruffles (1926-2005)
A very pretty studio pottery jug, decorated with a band of hand-painted alternating pink and blue leaves on an off-white background. The interior and handle are clear glazed terracotta clay, and the unglazed base is inscribed with 'Holkham' and 'CR' the mark of Cyril Ruffles (1926-2005), Head Potter at Holkham Studio Pottery during the 1950s.
Holkham Pottery was set up in 1951 by Lady Elizabeth, the wife of the 5th Earl of Leicester. He converted the 19th-century laundry and bowling alley at Holkham into a pottery studio for her new business. Holkham was the first stately home to produce pottery onsite and sell it in its gift shop, which inspired other stately homes to do the same. The pottery business finally closed in 2007, after 56 years of trading.
