Pair of Royal Doulton amphora-shaped vases
A pair of beautiful Royal Doulton stoneware amphora-shaped vases, glazed on the exterior in a rich, bright blue, and an off-white interior. Each vase has two handles and the rims have two pouring lips on opposing sides. Both vases are marked on the base with an impressed Royal Doulton mark and the design number '7294'. The mark indicated that these vases were made between 1922 and 1956, with the design dating from the early 1920s.
The vases have small flaws within the glaze from the original production process, this does not detract from the vases appearance.
Royal Doulton was founded in Vauxhall, London in 1815, originally producing a wide variety of stoneware, including storage jars, tankards, water filters, drain pipes, and even lavatories. The company later moved to Lambeth, and increased the number of artists it employed and the decorative pieces in its range of stonewares. In 1877, it took a share in a factory in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent and in the 1880s started to produce bone china tableware and still more decorative pieces. From 1853 to 1901, it used the Doulton & Co. mark, but following receipt of a royal warrant, it has used the name 'Royal Doulton'.
