Striking two-handled Empire Ware vase
A striking two-handled vase popular in the 1930s, this example is decorated in a variety of glossy drip glazes, with a rich burgundy at base and turquoise on the upper part with blue and dark purple painted wobbly stripes. Stamped with 'Empire Ware, England' on the base, a mark associated with the Empire Porcelain Company, Staffordshire between the 1930s and 1960s, it also has 'England' moulded into the base. This shape of vase was decorated in many colour variants.
The Empire Porcelain Company was established c.1895 in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire and finally closed in 1967.
Later reproductions of Empire Ware items were made for a time in Portugal in the early 2000s, these are stamped 'Made in Portugal'.
There is a flaw in the glaze around the foot, which occurred during the manufacturing process, however, this does not detract from the appeal of use of the vase.
