Vintage 1970s dark grey glazed Kilrush Pottery mug
An attractive dark grey/blue mottled glazed Kilrush Pottery mug made in the 1960s or 1970s (the factory was in existence 1961-1983) with in an impressed design of a stylised flower on both sides. The interior is plain cream/white glazed.
The Kilrush factory (located in Kilrush, County Clare, Ireland) was initially proposed to encourage West German investment in that part of Ireland in the 1950s with the Irish government providing tax and financial incentives. Before it formally began producing, around a hundred young Irish trainees were sent for a year to Ransbach-Baumbach in western Germany in 1960, a centre of pottery manufacture, to learn the trade. Kilrush Ceramics was then founded and began making ceramics in 1961 financed by a group of German businessmen, some already part of the ceramics industry, and local County Clare investors. However the company struggled to be a success and was taken over within a couple of years, and although it continued trading until 1983, it was never really viable, failing to find the right market for its products, despite producing high-quality and innovative wares.
