Pair of Wedgwood vine leaf plates
Two Wedgwood vine or cabbage leaf majolica plates in emerald green glaze, with moulded leaf pattern and impressed marks on reverse 'WEDGWOOD' 'V' 'KAT' (the final T being the year date for either 1865 or 1891 - the alphabet was repeated for two series before having an extra identifier added).
Josiah Wedgwood first introduced vegetable ware around 1760 with his cauliflower and pineapple (yes, we know that's not a vegetable!) shaped teapots and cannisters and other potteries imitated. The fad lasted about 10 years until 1770 when the fashion disappeared, only to be rediscovered in the middle of the 19th century, as well as proving fashionable in the mid-20th century and again at the moment!
Each plate:
- Diameter approx. 20cm
- Height approx. 2cm
