Maple & Co Ltd dresser with glazed display cupboard
A well-proportioned compact mahogany dresser, with cupboards and drawers below and glazed display cupboard above, made by (or retailed by) the high-quality Tottenham Court Road store of Maple and Co. The dresser has gothic-style glazing bars to the upper cupboard doors which sit beneath a classical frieze and cornice. There are a pair of drawers below the working surface, both stamped 'Maple & Co' with fine quality brass handles, and a pair of cupboard doors below for a singular wide storage cupboard. It was made between c1880-1895 (Maples added Ltd to the company name in 1895) and has mellowed to an attractive mid-brown tone. The dresser is a practical and elegant storage and display piece, which is less toweringly-high than many of its contemporaries, making it more suitable to modern living rooms or kitchens.
Established as Cook and Maple in Tottenham Court Road in 1841, by John Maple and James Cook as "wholesale and retail drapers, carpet factors, cabinetmakers, and furnishing warehousemen" by 1851 Maple was the sole proprietor. They provided high class furniture and other goods for the decoration of the home, including ‘every article requisite for Dining and Drawing Rooms’.
Maples had a long running royal connection, carrying out commissions at various royal residences and palaces and were appointed 'Upholsterers by special appointment' to their majesties Queen Victoria, King Edward VII and King George V. They also carried out work for other royal and imperial residences across Europe and further afield. John Maple's son John Blundell Maple, who took over the business from his father, was knighted in 1892 and the firm became Maple & Co Ltd in 1895.
