18th-Century Oak Lancashire Mule Chest
This country-style oak 'Lancastrian' mule chest has a capacious storage compartment under a hinged lid and hidden behind two rows of false drawer fronts; beneath which are three functioning drawers. There are fluted inset quarter columns at the corners and bracket feet with a frilled apron. Made from solid oak, this piece dates from the third or fourth quarter of the 18th century. There are clear signs of use and repairs from its c250-year life that gives this piece lots of character. One brass drawer-pull on one of the false drawers is missing and one hinge would benefit from some attention, although the lid is still fully functional. These pieces make excellent bedroom/landing pieces for storing spare duvets and bed-linen in period properties.
