A Cottage in Ireland, oil on board by Anthony Harper, 1938

£0.00Price

This painting, which depicts a small thatched cottage in a glade of trees with geese outside, is signed and dated Anthony Harper, 1938 at the lower right.  Painted on board, the work is in its original simple painted frame with a framer's label on the revese for 'F Morse, Picture Frame Maker, Frame Seller, Mount Cutter' of Lee High Road, Lewisham.  The label is annotated in pen 'Cottage in Ireland by Anthony Harper, Blackheath... Given by Winifred'.

  • Anthony Harper(1914-1986) lived at Lawn Terrace, Blackheath in 1939 with his parents and siblings.  His elder brother was also an artist, working on ecclesiastical stained glass, while Anthony specialised in portraiture and illustrations for commercial magazines.  The artist uses a deliberately naive style which combines both the post-impressionistic use of light and colour to represent the trees while employing the two-dimensional flatness popularised at this time by artists such as John Nash and Eric Ravilious.

    • Visible part of image approx. 27.5cm x 38cm
    • Frame dimensions approx. 31.5cm x 42cm
