Mdina Glass vase in turquoise and yellow stripes with original early paper label
A signed Mdina Glass vase in the 'Crystal Blue Stripe' design, made in Malta. The original, early paper label is still attached, suggesting this piece was probably made in the 1960s or 1970s. It has turquoise blue and yellow glass stripes, with veins of red-brown that appear when the piece is backlit!
Mdina Glass was founded in the Maltese town of Mdina, by Michael Harris in 1968. The company produced glassware in colours inspired by the natural elements around the island, the sea, sand, earth and sky. In 1972 Michael left Mdina, and formed the Isle of Wight Studio Glass company, on the Isle of Wight, UK. Some of the designs created by Michael Harris continued to be made at Mdina Glass after he left and the company is still producing glass. It is now run by Michael's most-skilled apprentice, Joseph Said and his family.
