Large Aesthetic Movement tureen with elephant handles
A large Aesthetic Movement tureen by James Gildea (J.G. Late Meyer) of Longport, Burslem in the Palm pattern.
Registered Design number 37418 (dating the design to 1885) with elephant head handles and a dark green transfer printed design of palm leaves (possibly the Chinese fan palm) and flying birds on a cream-glazed earthenware body.
There is a heat crack on the lower part of one side of the tureen and some minor chips to the base rim. We would not recommend it is put in an oven or used for very hot liquids, but it should be useable as a serving dish or just as a decorative item!
