Cabbage deep bowl by Subtil, Portugal
A deep-sided serving bowl moulded in the form of cabbage leaves, with deep green and white glazes to give a bold and naturalistic appearance. Impressed with Subtil, Portugal mark on the base.
This bowl is an example of the ceramics made in a vegetable form that developed in the 17th century in Europe and has remained popular and in production ever since. Cabbage and lettuce leaves are popular, but tomatoes, sweetcorn, artichokes, pineapples and various other fruits and vegetables have been produced at different times. It is described by some as majolica, although this term is used for a variety of different ceramics.
